The Biggest Threat Coaches Are Facing Right Now...

Written by Sam Hutchinson on Aug. 13th 2020

In this article I want to address one of the biggest threats coaches & other online business owners are facing right now which is causing people to get very limited results with their marketing.

When I quit my job and started my first coaching business back in 2013 I struggled like everyone does at the beginning. I had spent 10 years working in sales and marketing in the corporate world so I did have a head start compared to a lot of people.
But in 2013 social media was a lot different to what it is today, most people were using Facebook for sharing their personal lives, but using it for business was a relatively new concept for a lot of people, therefore there were far less people advertising and the newsfeed was no where near as cluttered compared to today.

It’s the same with Linkedin and all the other social media platforms, there are now millions more people using social media to promote their products and services and it feels like every other post on Facebook is an advert, you may have noticed.

The issue with this is that it’s now much harder to stand out and get noticed whether you are posting content organically or you are using the Ad platforms.
This is especially true when it comes to Facebook, the organic reach has more or less disappeared now, so even if you post valuable content regularly and you have a lot of followers, your content is being seen by very few people, it’s around 0.5% the last time I checked.

To put that into perspective, if you have 1,000 followers on Facebook around 5 people will see your posts, unless you are using the Ad platform of course.
So to get to the point, it’s now much harder for business owners in over crowded industries like coaching to get noticed.

But there is an even bigger problem which I see as I scroll through the newsfeed on Linkedin and Facebook every day, and I call it the ‘herd mentality’

There are literally thousands of coaches, consultants and service based businesses across every niche using Linkedin and Facebook to find clients, which has resulted in people watching what others are doing and copying them.

This has resulted in a huge swathe of posts and videos all saying the same thing, everyone is following what everyone else is doing which is essentially causing mass hysteria!

I made this mistake myself for a long time, I was watching what the ‘Guru’s’ were doing and modelling them very closely. There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from people who are further down the line than you, but if you don’t have your own unique angle and message, I’m afraid to say you will get overlooked.

This is a tragedy because there are lots of very talented coaches out there who can genuinely solve a major life or business problem, and there are a lot of people that need their help, but if their marketing efforts are being overlooked, the coach fails to make money and grow their business, and more importantly, people aren’t getting the help they need.

So what is the answer to all of this?

It’s a dilemma I have been trying to solve for the last 4 years and I’ve read lots of books, paid thousands for coaches, attended endless webinars and online training programs and most importantly I’ve tested lots of things to see what works and what doesn’t.

And you know what?…

I’ve ended up coming full circle and I’ve realised that success doesn’t happen by following and copying other people.

It doesn’t come by building fancy sales funnels or writing a best selling book, it comes by being a unique human and focusing on building relationships and solving problems

I believe that the reason so many coaches are failing in their business is because we have been told that it’s all about the marketing tactics, for example, online communities like ClickFunnels are telling people that they are ‘One Funnel Away From Success’

That is completely wrong, you are only one funnel away from success once you have your foundations and fundamentals right first

Things like being VERY clear on your perfect customer avatar. This is talked about a lot but if you are trying to market to everyone, you are effectively marketing to know one so it’s vitally important to get very clear on your ideal clients daily life and struggles, but most people aren’t.

The other thing is your offer, again a lot of people talk about having an ‘Irresistible Offer’, I’m sure you have heard that term a thousand times, but this is absolutely key to your success.

If you don’t have a very compelling offer/program which solves your clients problem in the shortest time possible, you don’t stand a chance, no matter how pretty your website or funnel is.

Lastly and probably the most important thing is your messaging.

If you aren’t able to communicate with your prospects in a way that moves them nearer to your world, then nothing else matters.

But the good news is, you know how to do all of this already because you know what gets your attention in the newsfeed, and it usually boils down to being genuinely interested in people and prioritising your clients results over your own, and sharing huge value up front.

The more value and support you offer your audience the more trust and credibility you gain, it’s not about fancy sales copy or some ninja trick, it’s just about communicating with people like you would face to face, but so many people get this wrong.

I explain more on this in my Linkedin training if you’re interested.

It’s not rocket science, the more people you help and the more problems you solve, the more money you make

Money is a bi-product of value

So stop focusing on yourself and making money and focus on your people and solving their problems

This article has ended up being far longer than I intended but I got a bit carried away because I’m so passionate about this.

I’ve spent the last 7 years of my life trying to understand what it takes to build a successful coaching business, and I’ve made every mistake in the book, and I’ve also had some big breakthroughs over the last few years.

So if you can relate to anything I have talked about in this article and you want to get away from the hamster wheel of doom and frustration, I am going to practice what I preach and offer to help you totally free of charge.

I set a side 20 slots in my calendar every month to speak to ambitious coaches who want to put a plan in place so they can start focusing on the 5% of tasks that will actually get results.

We will jump on a 30 minute call and the main purpose of the call is for me to find out more about you, your business and what you do to help your clients, and I will give you some very honest feedback based on what you’re doing right now.

I will then give you a strategy that you can start implementing into your business straight away based on your specific business and niche

The call is totally free of charge and you will walk away with a lot more clarity on how to improve your marketing.

If you want my help and we mutually decide there is a fit for us to work together we can discuss that, but if that’s not the case you will still get huge value from our conversation.

If you have any questions or would like to have a chat on messenger before we arrange a call you can send me a PM on Linkedin or Facebook

I really hope you got value from this article
